Creating a Storefront

Created with Vectorworks 2010
Here’s an idea when creating storefront. First, create a Wall Style that will become the glazing – make it an inch thick to simulate insulated glass. Give it a glass texture and create a Class – call it Storefront-Glazing.

Now create the frame, typically made from aluminum extrusions that are 2” thick and 4 ½” deep. Use the Mullion Tool to create the frame. The mullions will insert themselves in the “glazing” as you would expect. Both horizontal and vertical frame elements can be created with the Mullion Tool. As an alternative, use the Framing Member Tool to create the horizontal elements.

Finally, insert doors and windows into the storefront “system.” For doors, set the Jamb width and depth to “0” and the Leaf thickness to 1 ¾”. Set the top and side rail to 3” and the bottom rail to 4” – this will closely approximate a “narrow stile” storefront door.

For vents in the storefront, use an awning window with the Jamb thickness set to “0” and the Sash width set at 2” and the Depth at 1 ½”.

Both the windows and doors will insert themselves properly in the “glazing” Wall Style.
